Nicole Shimonek is a Winnipeg-based visual artist working across sculpture, installation, drawing, video, and performance. Her practice explores the symbolic and emotional potential of materials through experimentation and transformation.

She has participated in residencies at the Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity, L’AiR Arts (Paris), Bow Arts Trust (London), Brompton Design District (London), and Artscape Gibraltar Point (Toronto).

Shimonek’s work has been exhibited in Live in the Centre at the Winnipeg Art Gallery, Unafraid at Plug In ICA, Art Building Community at Gallery 1C03, and Walking and Being at the Everson Museum of Art (Syracuse, NY). Her videos have been screened at the Detroit Museum of New Art, BBC Big Screen events, Camden Roundhouse, Studio 303 at MAI, Supermarket Art Fair, Prairie Scene, and the Images Festival (Toronto). She has created site-responsive installations such as stay | flame: a postcard from my home for Illuminate the Night, Nuit Blanche, and participated in initiatives including the Social Innovation Challenge and Urban Idea’s Creative Placemaking Challenge.

Shimonek holds an MFA from Chelsea College of Art and Design, University of the Arts London.
