Nicole Shimonek’s work is interdisciplinary; connecting visual mediums of drawing, sculpture and design with theatrical disciplines of performance, set, staging, sound and video. She has an MFA from the Chelsea College of Art and Design
(London, England) and a BFA Honors from the University of Manitoba. Selected
exhibitions include Live in the Centre: An Incomplete and Anecdotal History
of Performance Art at the Winnipeg Art Gallery, Unafraid at Plug In
ICA, Art Building Community at Gallery 1C03 and Walking and Being at
the Everson Museum of Art (Syracuse, NY). She has been awarded public art
commissions through Urban Idea’s Creative Placemaking Challenge as well
as the Social Innovation Challenge. Her videos have screened at the Detroit Museum of New
Art (USA), on BBC’s big screen events, Camden Roundhouse (London, UK), at Prairie Scene (Ottawa), Images Festival (Toronto), Supermarket Art Fair (Stockholm, Sweden) and with Studio 303 at the MAI
(Montreal).
She has been an
Artist in Residence at the Banff Centre for the Arts (Canada), Brompton Design
District and with Bow Arts Trust (London, England). Upcoming is the Drawing Research Residency at L’AiR Arts
in Paris, France (March 2021). Other residencies include Plug In ICA’s Summer
Institutes with Post Commodity; Assume Astro Vivid
Focus and Trackings & Trappings.
Nicole’s practice investigates survival experiences through
materials - drawing, sculpture, performance, media and design.
