Nicole Shimonek is an interdisciplinary artist from Winnipeg, Canada. She has an MFA from the Chelsea College of Art and Design (London, England) and a BFA Honors from the University of Manitoba. She recently was an Artist in Residence at the Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity (Fall 2018). Other residencies include Propeller Island: An Evolving Artist Space (Brompton Design District, London, England), Plug In ICA’s Summer Institutes with Post Commodity (2010), Assume Astro Vivid Focus (2011), Trackings & Trappings (2019) and at SE1 Studios with Bow Arts Trust, London.
Her work has exhibited both nationally and internationally. This includes Live in the Centre: An Incomplete and Anecdotal History of Performance Art the Winnipeg Art Gallery, Unafraid at Plug In ICA, Art Building Communityat Gallery 1C03, Walking and Being at the Syracuse Museum of Art and Urban Ideas Creative Placemaking Challenge. Her videos have screened at the Detroit Museum of New Art, Camden Roundhouse (London, UK), at Prairie Scene (Ottawa), Images Festival (Toronto), with Studio 303 at the MAI (Montreal), Supermarket Art Fair (Stockholm, Sweden) and at WNDX (Winnipeg).
Nicole’s practice investigates survival experiences through materials - drawing, sculpture, performance media and design.
